A Bothered Mind

R. L. Burnside's thirteenth and final album before he died in 2005 is A Bothered Mind (2004)—thirteen contemporary blues songs each with rock-hard edges. Thanks to Spotify's recommendation algorithm, I listened to the album for the first time a few weeks ago, and I keep going back to it. "See What My Buddy Done," "Goin' Down South," "Go to Jail," "My Name Is Robert Too" and "Stole My Check" especially stand out, as does my favorite: "Someday Baby." I read Burnside was forced by his doctor to give up the drink around 2001, and after he got sober he had to learn the guitar all over again. So the tracks on this album are older recordings, but they fit well together for a cohesive whole, and they're as forceful and fast-paced as they are fun, with intense, rhythmic lyrics like these from "Someday Baby":

Goodbye girl better get gone Skit Gone Had a great time

Got beat pretty good Had a good thing going Got more than you gave

Goddamn but now I'll give it to you Girl, you got a game
