I didn't think I'd like Marriage Story (2019), a family comedy-drama written and directed by Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale (2005)), but it's quite good. The performances by Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver coupled with the stand-out screenplay is what gives the film its force. Driver is especially impressive in the role of Charlie Barber, a theater director in NYC. He and Nicole (his wife) are calling it quits, so she moves back to LA with their son while Barber stays on the East Coast. Both hire lawyers to handle the divorce, played by Laura Dern, a shaky Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta. Things become hostile and whatever amicable ties they once shared are gradually severed, while at the same time they carry inside themselves an unspoken, almost subconscious understanding of who they'd once been together. Perhaps not among the very best movies of the year but certainly one with some of the best performances.
